Broom Snakeweed (Gutierrezia sarothrae), a small shrub with numerous yellow flowers, becomes abundant on overgrazed rangelands. Compounds in the foliage are toxic to cattle and the animals avoid it. These grasshoppers feed especially on snakeweed, can detoxify the poison, and thrive.
