LEAVES: The simple, lance-shaped leaves are opposite on the stems. Leafless before onset of summer rains.

FLOWERS: Small white to pale yellow flowers open for the night and wilt quickly under the sun after mid morning. Two wide-spreading side petals and a purple-marked upper. They are closely packed on a narrow spike with dense green bracts.

PERENNIAL: The slender branching stems might reach to a height of mostly 20 to 30cm.

RANGE: This plant tends to be found in gravel soil in riparian zones in Southeastern Arizona.

FRUIT: The small dry capsules are obscured by the bracts in the spike.
