Found in partial shade in mixed conifer-broadleaf woodlands within Madera Canyon, Sta. Rita Mts., Arizona, USA. 10 September 2010. The upper arrow points to the club-shaped staminoid (lacks anther) and the lower arrow points to the stigma that will receive the pollen from a visiting bee.

FLOWERS: The small, bilaterally symetrical flowers are best seen with a magnifier. Notice the gland-tipped hairs on the peduncle. I suspect these are to deter crawling ants that might take the nectar without pollinating the flower.

LEAVES: Opposite leaves are triangular and serrated along the margins.

RANGE: In pine woods and woody canyons of Arizona, New Mexico and Sonora.

FRUIT: The fruit is a dry, two-valved capsule with many seeds..

UNARMED. Without thorns.

Scrophulariaceae -- Figwort Family
