LEAVES: The leaves are all arranged into a roseate, i.e. on a very short stem and very close to the ground. The blade is broadly oval and the petiole is long.

RANGE: In Arizona this plant is restricted to moist canyons. It is native to Europe and has been widely distributed as a result of human movements and homesteading.

PERENNIAL: Above ground portions are entirely herbaceous and at ground level save for the flowering/fruiting stalks.

FLOWERS: The small flowers are densely packed into a narrow spike that can be 10 to 40 cm tall. There are no showy petals; instead there are papery bracts.

FRUIT: Small dry capsules containing many seeds.
