Observed in the Patagonia Mts., Sta. Cruz Co., Arizona. 29 Aug. 2015.

FRUIT: Florets surrounded by very sharp, barbed spurs. These will stick painfully in socks or skin!

PERENNIAL GRASS: Ordinary-looking grass forming small clumps from perennial root stock. Plants are mostly less than one-half meter in height. Stems heavy with seeds often prostrate.

RANGE: A native grass throughout much of the southern United States. Grows on terraces where deep sand has accumulated.
