Found on a rocky slope adjacent to Peppersauce Canyon, Sta. Catalina Mts., Pinal Co., Arizona. April 2012.

FLOWERS: Four large, showy, yellow petals with a distinct texture. Eight stamens. Unopened buds with orange tint. Blooming is mostly in mid to late spring depending on elevation and spring rain events.

LEAVES: The leaves are lance shape and with uneven margins.

RANGE: This flower is characteristic of slopes to the east of Arizona and is sporadic on rocky slopes here. Through its range there are a number of varieties and named subspecies.

PERENNIAL HERB: Survives season to season within a subterranean crown.

FRUIT: Dry capsules with four sides develop below the flower petals.
