Found on a rocky slope near Rio Rico, Sta. Cruz Co., Arizona. July 2010.

FLOWERS: Five, large, unequal petals with bright red-orange bases. Very attractive. The stamens are also fascinating: They are divided into three groups with one group different than the other!

LEAVES: The leaves are palmately lobed with 5 to 7 toothed lobes. Some leaves may have no lobes at all.

RANGE: Found in the canyons and on the slopes in the borderland areas of southeastern Arizona. Found in open sunny areas.

PERENNIAL HERB: These plants appear very soon after the first monsoon-driven rains of summer. Underground roots and stems survive the drought and winter seasons allowing the plants to quickly take advantage of prime growing conditions.

FRUIT: Capsules with rather large, kidney-shaped seeds.
