Arizonensis --> Sonoran Desert Naturalist --> Sonoran Desert Places --> Aravaipa Canyon
IntroductionThis is a magical place .... a true oasis of water and lushness in the desert. The west end, north of Mammoth, Arizona, is clearly in Sonoran Desert habitat, whereas the east end, beginning near Klondyke is desert grassland. The area is administered jointly by the Nature Conservancy and the Bureau of Land Management. The stream is habitat to endangered native Arizona fish. Entry requires a permit from the BLM office in Safford (520-348-4400) - recently this access has been closed off. The west end is reached via SR 77. Aravaipa Road is is ten miles north of Mammoth or about the same distance south of Winkleman. The drive in from the highway is close to twelve miles. |
