Photo by Mike Plagens. Along the Arizona Canal in Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

In the Sonoran Desert along the Mexican border, this beautiful duck can be found on ponds and slow rivers. Once known as tree ducks because of their habit of nesting high up in tree holes. This one was found in Phoenix where it is a "rare bird" along the Salt River and at urban lakes/ponds. Note the pink-red bill and black under belly.
