Mostly perennial herbs in the Sonoran Desert. Flowers with numerous stamens and with the ovary inferior, i.e. positioned below the flower petals/sepals. Leaves with stiff, often hooked or stinging hairs. Several species, two shown.

Elongate, wavy toothed leaves are stiff and act like Velcro® - they will adhere to clothing or fur. Bright yellow flowers with many petals. Found along sandy washes in the Sonoran Desert. Detailed Description |
Short, deltoid shaped leaves are very rough and feel like sandpaper! Whitish flowers with complex morphology in a spike at ends of twigs. Below flowers on the spikes there may be few to many dead and bleached pale leaves or leaf-like bracts attached. Found in deep sand along washes or near river flood plains in the Sonoran Desert.
