Long-tailed Antlion

Clathroneuria coquilletti

an adult Myrmeliontidae, probably Clathroneuria coquilletti, photo © by Michael Plagens

Observed at light near Rackensack Wash, Maricopa Co., Arizona, USA. 11 Aug. 2016.

The immature larval stage of this insect lives in dry, soft sandy soil where it either produces an inverted cone for capturing crawling insects or else tunnels through the sand in search of prey. They are predacious. Adults probably take some flower nectar but are infrequently seen because they emerge at night and then for only a few weeks during the hot summer months.
