The principal food of these bugs are other insects such as caterpillars and soft-bodied bugs. There rough, cryptic color and pattern allows them to hide effectively on the bark of trees and shrubs. If their camouflage fails they can emit foul-smelling fluid if disturbed. There are several very similar species of Brochymena stink bugs.
